Okanui heritage clothing is a proud Australian icon of the surfing scene. Born in the 50’s but grew up in the 80’s our timeless clothing is made for years of summer memory making. Glide though long and lazy barefoot days and tropical nights in in blissful comfort. Then, return to that place whenever you wear your Okanuis.
The Okanui story begins with a passion for surf, a touch of ingenuity and a lot of Australian pioneering spirit. Founder Dick Ash was the tender age of 15 when he was inspired to create his first pair of cotton board shorts using his Mum’s sewing machine and some old canvas mailbags from the Avalon post office. The shorts were cut long, specially suited for sitting on the new-style Okanui surfboards that had exploded on to the Aussie surf scene in 1956.
Before long, he was making the shorts for all of his surfing mates. He nicknamed them Okanuis, and a true Australian surf icon was born! In 1978 Dick decided to take his shorts to the masses. Not content with plain canvas, he designed the distinctive hibiscus print that remains the signature of the Okanui clothing brand, typifying the timeless and tropical spirit of days at the beach.
Nearly 40 years later, Okanui remains a family business with our core focus on producing high quality, comfortable and fun clothing. Beach, boat or backyard, your Okanui heritage garment it is designed to improve with wear to become a faithful favourite, always taking you back to that place where you want to be.
Our range has expanded to include shirts and t shirts, linen and kids shorts, made from the highest quality textiles, focused on ethical and sustainable manufacturing for the past 38 years.
